Lot Essay

This view of the Kloveniersburgwal shows the house of the Amsterdam regent Willem Boreel, next to the Amsterdamse Kloveniersdoelen. The Doelen used to be the headquarters of the Civic Gard of Amsterdam. Rembrandt painted his Nightwatch especially for the Arquebusiers ('Kloveniers') guild Hall in the Doelen, where the painting hung until 1715. Next to the Doelen is the tower 'Swijgh Utrecht' and at the end of the Kloveniersburgwal, the Waag on the Nieuwmarkt is just visible.

A composition from the same viewpoint by Jan Ekels I is in the Amsterdam Museum, Amsterdam (inv. no. SA 8422).
