Lot Essay

According to Ineke Bruynooghe the present painting is of the artist's late period. During this time he was known to have worked on several paintings that focued on the theme of a woman in a rich interior. Many of these works were sold through the art dealer Mr. A. D. Huyvetter of Antwerp and, later, Mr. Campo. Though the sitter cannot be fully identified, Ms. Brynooghe notes that there are similarities to the model and the artist's daughter whom he was known to use as a subject.

We are grateful to Ineke Bruynooghe for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry. This painting will be included in her forthcoming Jan Portielje catalogue raisonn.
