Lot Essay

Hackaert left his native Amsterdam, travelling to Switzerland and Italy before returning there to settle in 1658. A number of drawings from his journeys are in the famous Atlas Blaeu in the Nationalbibliothek, Vienna. Judging from the date, the present drawing was presumably done in Switzerland (see also G. Solar, Jan Hackaert, Die Schweizer Ansichten 1653-1656, Zurich, 1981).
