Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck for confirming the attribution on the basis of a transparency (written communication, March 2005). He suggests a tentative date for the painting of the end of the 1620s.

Dr. Beck compares the present work to a pair of panels sold at Christie's, London, 9 December 1988, lot 95. He notes that they are all of similar size, composition and subject and may therefore originally have formed part of a series.
