Lot Essay

From the late 20s of the 17th Century onwards, Jan van Goyen started to move away from the example of his teacher Esaias van de Velde. Mainly under the influence of such Haarlem painters as Pieter Molijn and Salomon van Ruysdael, he developed his characteristic landscapes recognisable by their tonality and realism. Through the 1630s Van Goyen produced simple river landscapes in mainly brown tones, like the present lot.

We are grateful to Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck for confirming the attribution after inspection of the original (verbal communication, 3 February 2006).
