Lot Essay
From a Flemish family of artists, Jan Peeter Verdussen possibly studied with his father, specialising in landscape paintings as well as battle scenes. After his apprenticeship he moved to Turin, working for Charles-Emanuel III of Savoy, King of Sardinia, for whom he painted the great military feats of his reign. He is then recorded in Marseille in 1744.
Verdussen is widely recognised as a battle painter, but he also painted more peaceful subjects, such as the present pair, linking his interest in encampments and horses with the graceful meeting of ladies and gentlemen for a hunt in the country.
