Lot Essay

Alice Davies dates the present painting to c. 1670, comparing this unidentified inner-city canal, most likely in Amsterdam, to Van Kessel's large View of Westerkerk of 1669 (Musée d'Ixelles, Brussels) and the Kloveniersburgwal with the Bushuis of 1672 (?) in the Amsterdam Historical Museum. Working from a photograph, she writes that it "appears to be one of Jan van Kessel's loveliest pictures" (loc. cit.).
