Lot Essay

This new provenance, despite the lack of specific dimensions, is listed as 'A Capital Piece' and is likely to be this particular painting, as Jan Weenix rarely painted the combination of a dead deer with a heron. Another painting by Jan Weenix with a deer and a heron as well as a dog and a monkey, among other hunting trophies, is in the Ackland Art Museum, Chapel Hill, North Carolina (121.8 x 158.4 cm, inv. no. 84.43.1).

We are grateful to Anke A. van Wagenberg-Ter Hoeven, Ph.D., for her help in cataloguing this lot. She is currently completing the Catalogue Raisonné on Jan Baptist Weenix and Jan Weenix.
