Lot Essay

It is likely that the present picture depicts an actual battle and that the artist intended a true likeness of the officer on horseback, however, his identity and hence the battle depicted in the background are yet to be established. Certainly his likeness does not match that of either the Duke of Monmouth or King William III, whom Wyck depicted repeatedly in pictures of this type.
