Jane Maria Bowkett was one of the leading female artists of the Victorian period. During a time when it was unusual for women to pursue a career in the arts, she was one of the few to exhibit at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street and the British Institution. Her idyllic images of domestic life and particularly children earned her high regard.
