Lot Essay

An early work by the artist, to be dated to the 1750's, and to be compared with Gideon, sacrificing a goat, in the Mittelrhein-Museum, Koblenz (J. Strasser, Januarius Zick, 1730-1797, 1994, p. 26 and p. 353, no G30, with ill.). These early works show Rembrandt's influence.
The subject is taken from Genesis XXXVII:32-33.
