Lot Essay

False Start I and False Start II (see the following lot) were printed using the same lithographic stones but with variant inking resulting in two very different images. In both, the straight bottom edge-line supports the slashing strokes of lithographic inks. The heavily built up surface is filled with tumbling, stencilled words that both arrest the eye and challenge conventional left-to-right reading.
Robert Blackburn was the Master Printer at ULAE who worked with Johns and many other post-war artists in their early forays of lithography.
