Lot Essay

We are grateful to Edgar Munhall for confirming the attribution to Greuze and in a written communication dated 9 December 2003, he states: '...this Girl with a Dog on Her Lap appears to me to be an autograph work by Jean-Baptiste Greuze, executed around 1800. The young female type in her 'innocent' décolletage is familiar from many late works by the artist and the dog ranks among the best he ever painted'.

A number of inferior versions or copies of the composition exist, including one in a private collection, France (with the dog's eyes facing right).
