This picture may be the work bought by the Havemeyers in 1888 as Landscape with Pond. Even today, the Havemeyer collection remains one of the most renowned collections of European Art ever assembled. Extraordinary for its scope and breadth, the majority of the collection, which included masterpieces by Rembrandt and Manet, was bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1929 while the remaining works were sold at auction in 1930.
The Barbizon School was strongly represented in the collection as testified to by the family's acquisition of no less than twenty five Corots, thirty eight Courbets, and nine Millets. Among this group masterpieces such as Courbet's Woman with a Parrot and Corot's Baccante by the Sea.
The sky area was reworked later by Corot, and under ultra-violet light examination, there is evidence of a cluster of trees.
This work has been examined and authenticated by Martin Dieterle, and will be included in the fifth supplement of the Corot catalogue raisonné.
