Lot Essay

Florence Raymond compares this sheet to another study of a woman in a similar position, but in reverse and where only the angle of the head is different, at the Musée Jacquemart-André, Paris (inv. 1591; F. Raymond, op. cit., pl. 23). It is dated to the 1730s when the artist illustrated several fables by La Fontaine.
