Lot Essay

A photo-certificate from Jacques Bailly dated Paris, 13 November 2000 accompanies this work.
A native Frenchman, Jean Dufy travelled only twice to Venice, but its architecture and mise-en-scene became one of the artist's favorite subjects. Dufy's penchant for the city is evident in Venice, a tightly detailed gouache bursting with the color and animation for which the artist is best known.
