Lot Essay

Hüe was strongly influenced by Vernet, showing a pre-romanticism apparent already in his master's works. He, however, made an even greater play with the effects of light reflected in the water and the picturesque aspects of his scenes, as can be seen in the present work. A similar (signed) moonlit composition by Hüe was offered in these rooms on 21 October 1997, lot 196.

In a nineteenth-century frame inscribed 'Societé des Amis des Arts 1818.'
