In this very expressive and quickly executed sheet, Millet depicts Norman peasants hauling in storm-tossed seaweed which was used as fertilizer on the fields. It appears to be a first sketch for a more worked out drawing datable to 1854 according Étienne Moreau-Nélaton (Millet raconté par lui-même, Paris 1921, vol. 1, p. 14, fig. 103). While Millet was clearly searching for the right composition in this sheet, he ultimately made a number of changes in the arrangement which became more horizontal in the finished drawing.
