PROPRIÉTÉ DE L’HOPITAL UNIVERSITAIRE AUSTRAL, BUENOS AIRES, VENDU A TITRE CARTATIFAYANT APPARTENU A LA COLLECTION BORNNous sommes heureux de présenter ici un ensemble inédit de meubles et d’objets provenant du mythique décor imaginé pour la famille Born par Jean-Michel Frank. Cet aménagement qui peut être considéré comme l’état le plus achevé de l’esthétique du décorateur, fut l’intérieur pour lequel la collaboration avec Alberto Giacometti, mais aussi Salvador Dali ou Christian Bérard fut la plus prolifique. Des dizaines d’objets furent imaginés à cette occasion. C’est en août 1938, alors qu’ils résident à Saint-Jean-de-Luz, que les collectionneurs argentins se rendent à Paris pour rencontrer Jean-Michel Frank, qui leur fait visiter ses ateliers et les conduit chez Dalí. Présentés au parc des expositions à la Porte de Versailles au début de l’année 1939, les meubles et les lambris de ce décor sont expédiés en Argentine par bateau pour être installés à Buenos Aires. Ce spectaculaire aménagement reste l’un des rares décors, sinon le dernier, encore en partie conservé. Construite dans la banlieue chic de Buenos-Aires, face au Rio de la Plata, la maison s’élève sur deux niveaux. Les façades blanches sont dépouillées, seulement animées par les fenêtres et les balcons ouvragés du premier étage. Côté jardin, une large terrasse est soutenue par cinq colonnes doriques. Les pièces sont distribuées assez simplement : les espaces de réception sont au rez-de-chaussée et les parties privées au premier étage. Notre mobilier provient pour l’essentiel des pièces de réception. Le grand salon donnant sur le jardin reprend les éléments de celui de Marie-Laure de Noailles : murs recouverts de carreaux de parchemin, lourdes portes de bronze, importante cheminée non pas en mica mais, ici, en marbre de Carrare sculpté par Giacometti. Contrairement au salon des Noailles qui avait été traité dans des tons blancs et crème, Frank utilise ici la couleur. Des jaunes paille, des verts d’eau, des bleus azur, des mauves constituent la palette du décorateur. La grande bibliothèque voit ses lambris tendus de cuir fauve gainé par Hermès. Dans le fumoir, plus sobre, lambrissé de chêne brossé, Frank fait intervenir Emilio Terry pour le dessin du trumeau, Dali pour le paravent, Bérard pour le tapis, Giacometti toujours pour les luminaires. Mais c’est sans doute dans la salle à manger que l’esthétique de Frank prend toute sa mesure avec des murs de staff blanc, d’immenses lustres en bronze doré aux lignes barbares, des portes en chêne brossé et doré à la feuille où les boutons des portes ont été sculptés dans le bronze par Giacometti. Parmi les quelques pièces provenant de cet exceptionnel décor, se trouvent une lampe Marianne ainsi que deux lampes Grecque en plâtre jaune d’Alberto Giacometti. Ces objets seront accompagnés de quelques créations imaginées par le décorateur, ses lampes Signe de la terre en albâtre, un joli bureau de dame en chêne, un encrier inédit en terre vernissé, des boites d’osier et une lampe X en bronze patiné. L’Hôpital Universitaire Austral, institution à but non lucratif, partie du Centro Académico de Salud (Académie Centrale de Santé), est spécialisé dans l’assistance biomédicale, l’enseignement et la recherche. Il a ete fonde en 2000 grâce à la donation généreuse d’une fondation argentine et à différents dons privés et instutionnels, qui ont permis l’acquisition du campus, la construction et l’équipement des batiments. C’est un hôpital général de pointe, qui accueille des malades atteints d’affections complexes, tant nationaux qu’étrangers. L’hôpital Austral est spécialisé et pionnier en matière de médecine foetale, de chirurgie cardiaque, de maladies du foie et de transplantations d’organes. Travaillant en collaboration étroite avec des centres de recherche reconnus, notamment le Boston’s Children’s Hospital, le Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, le Karolinska Institute en Suède, c’est également un des membres fondateurs l'Alianza Latinoamericana de Instituciones de Salud (Alliance Latino-américaine des Institutions de Santé), à laquelle sont affiliées l’Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, la German Clinic of Chile et la Santa Fe Foundation of Bogotá, Colombie. Les fonds que l’Hôpital Universitaire Austral recevra de la vente de cet ensemble, aideront à la construction et à l’équipement d’un hôpital de jour multidisciplinaire, dédié au traitement du cancer et autres maladies graves, ainsi qu’à la modernisation de l’équipement biomédical. We are pleased to present a new collection of furniture and objects from the legendary interior designed by Jean-Michel Frank for the Born family. This arrangement, which can be regarded as the most complete state of the designer's aesthetic, was the interior for which the collaboration with not only Alberto Giacometti, but also Salvador Dali and Christian Bérard, was the most prolific. Dozens of objects were designed for the commission. It was in August 1938 that the Argentinian collectors, who lived in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, went to Paris to meet Jean-Michel Frank, who showed them round his workshops and took them to visit Dalí. The furniture and wainscoting of this interior were shown at the exhibition centre at the Porte de Versailles in early 1939 and then shipped to Argentina to be installed in Buenos Aires. This spectacular collection is one of only a few, if not the last, to remain partly intact. Looking out on the Rio de la Plata, in the upmarket suburbs of Buenos Aires, the house is built on two levels. The white facades are bare, enlivened only by the windows and the ornate balconies on the first floor. On the garden side, a large terrace is supported by five Doric columns. The distribution of rooms is fairly simple: the reception rooms are on the ground floor and the family's private rooms are on the first floor. Our furniture comes mainly from the reception rooms. The large living room overlooking the garden has elements of that of Marie-Laure de Noailles: walls covered with parchment tiles, heavy bronze doors, large fireplace, not in mica, but in Carrara marble here, sculpted by Giacometti. Unlike the Noailles' living room that featured a lot of white and cream, Frank used colour here. His palette included straw yellow, water green, azure blue and mauve. In the large library, the wainscoting is hung with tawny leather by Hermes. In the more sober smoking room with its brushed oak wainscoting, Frank had Emilio Terry design the pier glass, Dali the folding screen, and Bérard the carpet, while Giacometti was entrusted with the lighting once again. However, it is undoubtedly in the dining room that Frank's aesthetic comes into its own, with the white staff walls, huge gilded bronze chandeliers with their outlandish lines, and brushed oak, gold leaf doors whose knobs were sculpted in bronze by Giacometti. Among the few pieces from this unique decor are a Marianne lamp and two Greek lamps in yellow plaster by Alberto Giacometti. These objects were accompanied by some creations made by the designer: his alabaster Signe de la Terre lamps, a lovely oak bureau de dame, a novel glazed earthenware inkstand, wicker boxes and a bronze patina X lamp. Hospital Universitario Austral is a non-profit organisation and part of the Centro Académico de Salud (Central Academy of Health). It specialises in biomedical assistance, teaching and research. It initiated its activities in 2000 thanks to the generous donation of an Argentine foundation, as well as donations from private individuals and institutions, who made it possible to acquire the campus, construct and equip the necessary buildings. It is an acute general hospital, which receives referrals of high complexity national and international patients. It specializes and is pioneer in medical advances of foetal medicine, surgeries of the heart, liver and organ transplants. Working in close collaboration with renowned research centres including the Boston Children's Hospital, the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, it is also one of the founding members of the Alianza Latinoamericana de Instituciones de Salud (Latin American Alliance of Healthcare Organisations), which is affiliated with the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, the German Clinic of Chile and the Santa Fe Foundation of Bogotá, Colombia. The funds that Hospital Universitario Austral will receive from the sale of this collection will help to build and equip a multidisciplinary day hospital dedicated to the treatment of cancer and other serious diseases, and help bring the hospital's biomedical equipment up to date.
