Lot Essay

An unsigned and undated rectangular version of this picture is in the Wallace Collection, London. The latter includes bows on the sleeves of the sitter's dress. Ingamells (op. cit., p. 326, under no. P128) also mentions two other smaller versions: one in the Musée Granet, Aix-en-Provence, (panel, 20 x 18 cm.), where the sitter wears a yellow dress with blue sleeves, and one sold at Christie's, London, 2 December 1983, lot 46 (canvas, 46 x 32.5 cm.), dated 1723 and showing two whole-length figures, one comparable with the figure in the present composition.
