The Monterey Pop Festival was a landmark in Hendrix's career. Up until this point Hendrix had successfully proved himself in Britian and Europe but it was his flamboyant appearance in Monterey culminating in the sacrifice of his guitar which won the hearts of America. According to Glebbeek and Shapiro in Electric Gypsy, Directly as a result of Monterey, Jimi was the instant toast of the LA rock elite... What Jimi did that night was to sum up all music that had preceded him at Monterey - deep bluesman, funky soul brother, folk poet and pyschedelic guitar hero - and announce his arrival as the universal fusion artist...
