Born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1891, Nixon studied at the Slade and the South Kensington Art School, winning a Rome scholarship in 1923. Painting mostly landscapes and topographical scenes, he also produced etchings and engravings. Upon moving to Cornwall in 1931 - on the advice of Lamorna Birch - he married the artist Nina Berry, with whom he ran an art school in St Ives.
