Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Marijke C. de Kinkelder of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for confirming the attribution from a transparency (private communication, 20 November 2003). The present composition is a version by Haensbergen of Cornelis van Poelenburgh's prototype in the Russell collection, Amsterdam. Haensbergen was a pupil of van Poelenburgh in the 1660s and worked in his studio in Utrecht.
