Abbildungen nach der Natur von auserlesenen Blumen und Frchten von Joh: Jacob Luttringshausen, an album of 38 original watercolours of flowers and fruit. [Germany: circa 1788]. 2° (365 x 230mm). 3pp. index in pencil, listing 110 species loosely inserted (numbered '1' to '111', but omitting entry for '48'). 38 original pencil, watercolour and bodycolour drawings of flowers and fruit on 18 leaves, some heightened with gum arabic, most titled in ink with Latin binomials in a contemporary German hand, and numbered and occasionally titled in pencil, in the same hand, 3 drawings additionally titled in French in a different but early hand 'A. Fleuri le 6 Moy du May 1788 - B le 8. me.', 'D Fleuri le 9 Moy du May' and 'A Fleuri le 7 Moy du May 1788'. (First leaf with small marginal paper flaw, occasional marginal ink-marking, 4 leaves detached.) Contemporary paper-covered boards, label with decorative printed border and calligraphic title on upper board (worn). Provenance: Johann Jacob Luttringshausen (artist, label on upper board).

An attractive collection of 18th Century German watercolours of flowers and fruit by a competent amateur artist. The majority of the images depict flowers, some full-page, others grouped on single pages. Stylistically they are typical of their period, artfully arranging the plants into compositions that appear natural, but allow the artist to demonstrate, for example, leaves and blossoms in both plan and elevation, filling the page skilfully, whilst providing a clear botanical record.
