JOHN AND JAMES LILLYWHITE

Cricketers' Companion for 1874-[1885]. London: John Lillywhite [later John and James Lillywhite], Kent and Co., [1874-1885]. 12 vols. in 3, 8vo. (162 x 106mm), fielding diagrams, 1878 with errata slip. (Title and preliminaries to 1881 creased and spotted, very occasional spotting elsewhere, margins close cropped mainly affecting page numbers and catch-numerals but occasionally touching on text, advertisement leaves lacking.) Two vols. in contemporary half roan (lacking spines), the other in modern black buckram (wrappers not bound in).

The last twelve volumes in the 21-volume series. The Companion, an enlarged version of Lillywhite's Guide, co-existed with Wisden from 1865 to 1885. As Derek West comments in his bibliography (Guide to Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion, 1995, pp. 17-20), it provides 'a gold-mine of information on club cricket', 'a veritable mine of invaluable information on the doings of the first-class counties', and a regular review of the season which is 'of pre-eminent importance for a knowledge of the history of the game'. Allen 56; West p. 8; Padwick 1088. (3)
