Lot Essay

The Spencer Watsons moved to Dunshay Manor in 1922, renovating it soon after. This triptych formed the decoration for panels mounted within an overmantel and it would seem probable that the artist painted it on site.

Armstrong was fascinated throughout his career by Greek mythology, and he has used Pan, the Greek god of woods, fields, flocks and herds as inspiration for this triptych. He undertook a number of murals in his early career, this piece dates circa 1925.

We are grateful to Jonathan Gibbs for his assistance in cataloguing of this lot.
