The following inscription, partially indistinct, is written to the right of and below the figure: 'Iskatupee, principal chief of the Pawnee Republic, a band of the Pawnee Nation - A great partisan - a distinguished warrior - succeeded his father now is about 30 years of age lives on the Loup Wolf River - La Plata 140 miles W.S.W. from Council Bluffs in the direction of Santa Fe A rapid drawing from nature in presence of Major . . .' and 'Medallion on his breast bore a head of Madison'.
