Lot Essay

John Berney Ladbrooke was the son of Robert Ladbrooke (1769-1842), a leading member of the Norwich School of artists, and co-founder of the Norwich Society of Artists. He studied under his uncle by marriage, John Crome (1768-1821) and also with John Thirtle (1777-1839).

John Berney Ladbrooke was himself a successful teacher, most notably to John Middleton (1828-1856). His oil paintings are characterised by an intricate attention to detail and the dramatic potential of light in a landscape.

We are grateful to Peter Kennedy Scott for suggesting the present work is likely to be a view in Gunton Park, North Norfolk.
