Lot Essay

Born in Hampton, Connecticut, John Brewster, Jr. learned his craft despite his condition as a deaf mute. He traveled throughout New England for most of his life and successfully supported himself as a portrait and miniature painter. Brewsters' penciled signature and the date is recognizable on most stretchers of his canvases.
