Lot Essay

Charlton painted sporting scenes, portraits and military subjects. His most important commission came from Queen Victoria for a picture of her arriving at St. Paul's for the Diamond Jubilee. Many of his pictures, like the present work, were painted on a very large scale which enabled him to demonstrate his vivacious and free handling of paint.
