Lot Essay

This fairly early sheet is intensely drawn in almost pure wash. The richness of the middle ground is characteristic of Crome’s later composition drawings, and is one of the first examples of his interest in sunlit wooded views with ponds or rivers, which he would return to throughout his career. It is closely related to one with a similar inscription, dated 28 August 1804: The Boathouse, Bludenston, Suffolk, in the Hickman Bacon collection.
We are grateful to Timothy Wilcox for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
