John Dalby came from the Yorkshire family of painters and his work is sometimes confused with that of David Dalby, to whom he was related. Though their styles and subjects are similar it would seem that John's technique and manner was more Victorian.
The first official record of John Dalby was in 1838, when he was living with Thomas Dalby in York and practicing as a painter. John specialized in painting hunting scenes that were admired for their liveliness, detail and precision.
The painting was in the collection of John, 4th Marquess of Bute and descended in his family until 1999.
