Lot Essay

John Kelly has created a limited edition of 50 etchings to benefit the students of Goodenough College, a postgraduate residential college established in 1930 in the heart of London. The aim of the College remains to improve international tolerance and understanding amongst students from around the world who are on the brink of their careers.

All proceeds from the sale of Three Cows in a Pile will go to the Goodenough College to benefit its students in need.

John Kelly's stacked cows were inspired by the work of Sir William Dobell who, at the outbreak of World War II, was commissioned by the Australian Government to create papier mache cows to enable an airforce base to masquerade as grazing land. The bronze sculpture from which this etching is derived is currently on display in central London.
