Lot Essay

This picture is first recorded in Linnell's journal in his entry for 1 October 1828 when he refers to painting 'a small picture of Milking Upright' and later on 1st August 1829 when he descibes its exchange with the artist William Mulready (1786-1863) for 'a small Painting of his hand'. In 1830, Linnell started work on a larger replica of 'Milking' (16 x 20 in.) which he exhibited at the British Institution in 1831.

We are grateful to David Linnell for his assistance in cataloguing this picture.
