Lot Essay

This print is from John Phillip's recent series 'Vanitas'. Using cutting edge photographic and image manipulation techniques, hundreds of individual photographs are combined into a singular, hyper-real image that reflects both the securities of times past and the fragility of time present.

John Phillips (born Sheffield, 1951) is an artist, photographer and printmaker. He studied sculpture at Sheffield Polytechnic (now Sheffield Hallam University), and arrived in West London in 1974. He immediately set up his own studio with his then partner, which became Paddington Printshop, an arts resource that produced posters and prints, working with the extraordinary community that lived locally. John is Artistic Director of londonprintstudio. He also teaches on the studios MA programme, and has a PhD in Fine Art from Brighton University.
