Lot Essay

The sitter was a stockholder in the East India Company and author of Observations of the Reports of the Directors respecting Trade between India and Europe. A mezzotint after a painting by James Northcote, R.A. (1746-1831), published in 1803, is in the National Portrait Gallery, London, inv. no. NPG D35685. A portrait of Thomas Henchman, Deputy Governor of the Military Orphan Society by George Carter (1737-1794) is in the Victoria Memorial Hall, Calcutta and is illustrated M. Archer, India and British Portraiture, London, 1979, p. 275, pl. 191.
