John Sowerby (fl. 1871-1914) Michelmas Daisies signed 'JOHN SOWERBY' (lower right), and further inscribed with title and dated 'SEPT 3RD 1909' (on the reverse, according to the previous cataloguing) pencil and watercolour with gum arabic, heightened with bodycolour 10½ x 14½ in. (26.7 x 36.8 cm.)

Lot Essay

Sowerby lived in Gateshead, Colchester and Abingdon. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1879. Depictions of country gardens were amongst his favourite subjects. His watercolours show the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites.
