Lot Essay

Wade's representation of the Annunciation has given the traditional iconography a modern twist. Wade has depicted Mary, Joseph and the Archangel Gabriel in a town, painted in his own characteristic style, using objects and items from our modern society to symbolise the Annunciation and other Biblical references. The no-entry sign represents the Immaculate Conception; the bubble car = donkey; the Christmas tree = the Nativity; the empty pram = Herod's Massacre of the Innocents; the pyramids = the flight into Egypt; and the rolled away manhole cover = the Resurrection.
