Post lot text
Of all the African Carnivores, wild dogs have suffered the greatest contraction of range in the shortest time. The take-over of land for livestock, direct persecution and diseases from a burgeoning population of domestic dogs are partly responsible. This short-lived species, dependent on frequent and large litters to replenish numbers and on unimpeded access to fluctuating prey populations, may need a spread of populations and minimum numbers to sustain itself. If wild dogs decline too much with populations too far apart their extinction could be quite swift. Wild dogs are endangered in many countries and listed as vulnerable (IUCN) everywhere.
