Jorge Oteitza is considered, along with Eduardo Chillida, one of the most influential figures in Spanish Post-War sculpture. In 1957, after being awarded the Gran Premio International at the São Paulo Bienal, he abandoned figuration and expressionism to embark instead on an epic exploration of abstraction. Looking at Mondrian and Malevich, taking his inspiration, at least in the beginning, from both artists and their geometric idioms, he chose the cube, a perfect and pure shape, as the basic abstract element for his sculptural experimentation.

In Homenage a Mallarmé, Oteitza combines the evocation of his hallmark spatial concerns with an intense and personal homage to Stéphane Mallarmé, the French poet and leader of the Symbolist movement.
