In 1978, in protest at the acquisition of his Feuerstätte by the Basel Kunstmuseum, Beuys and a large group of followers formed a procession during Carnival in which they brought a new work, Feuerstätte II, to the museum and presented it to them. Felt Suit was made as one of the suits to be worn in the procession. The marchers wore a suit each, as well as a pigs mask, and carried 'Eurasian' copper staffs which were later bunched together as part of the installation. Felt featured throughout Beuys work, representing natural, and in his work spiritual, warmth.
