Lot Essay
A companion piece to this drawing is at the Victoria & Albert Museum, entitled Landscape with Peasants gathering sticks and dated 1789 (no. 42-1895), which depicts a larger group of peasants in a similar wooded landscape. Both drawings illustrate Farington's meticulous application of detailed penwork with carefully applied wash creating a picturesque scene filled with light and character, influenced by his master Richard Wilson (1714-1782; see lots 118-119), with whom he worked for several years.
Principally known for his Diary which is recognised as a prime source of information about the early years of the Royal Academy and about London in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries, Farington was one of the first students at the Royal Academy Schools in 1769 and exhibited regularly between 1778 and 1813, and was elected a full Royal Academician in 1785.
