Lot Essay

Drawn during Heintz's sojourn in Italy in 1584-9, after a fresco by Polidoro now destroyed (cf. V.Birke and J. Kertèsz, Die Italienischen Zeichnungen der Albertina, Vienna 1992, inv. 390). During this trip Heintz drew a number of copies after earlier masters and as with many of his contemporaries was drawn to Polidoro's outdoor frescoes. In 1585 Heintz drew at least two other signed and dated copies after Polidoro, now in Darmstadt and in Vienna (J. Zimmer, Joseph Heintz der Alter, Zeichnungen und Dokumente, Munich, 1988, nos. A27-8, figs. 62-63). Zimmer records another two drawings by Heintz dated 1585, one after the antique and and the other after Taddeo Zuccaro (J. Zimmer, op. cit., nos. A 17, A 35, figs. 51, 71).
