Lot Essay

The sitter was the daughter of William Caulfeild (d.1671), 1st Viscount Charlemont, and Sarah, second daughter of Charles, Viscount Drogheda. In 1693, following the death of her first husband James Margetson, she married George Carpenter of Holme, Herefordshire, who in 1719 was created Lord Carpenter of Killaghy, Co. Kilkenny, in recognition of his support and defence of the protestant succession of King George I.
