The Dance of the Muses was commissioned by Baron Hendryx for his castle in Ghent. The models are the Baron's daughters and her friends, however, portrait depictions were most likely not the artist's intentions as the faces are reminiscent of female models in earlier works by Paelinck, and appear somewhat generalized. There are three other works in the series from this commission: Allegory of Beauty, The Judgment of Midas and Apollo with the Muses Erato, Terpsichore and Euterpe.
