Joseph Pressmane was born in 1904 in Poland to a large Jewish family. He studied art in Lvov and Warsaw in 1922-23. After a three year sojourn in Eretz Israel, Pressmane decided to settle in Paris in 1926. He spent the War years in France. His work attracted attention in the post-war years and he was hailed as "one of the outstanding younger painters of the 'School of Paris'" (C. Roth, Jewish Art, Jerusalem, 1971, p. 239).
