Lot Essay

Baker (1859-1947) was Southall's first cousin and wife, and the couple waited until she was past child bearing age to get married in 1903. This portrait was made a decade before their marriage. According to the 1980 exhibition catalogue, Southall showed the portrait to Sir Edward Burne-Jones who called it 'a beautiful drawing.'
