Lot Essay

Joseph Walter was born in Bristol and remained there throughout his life, marking him, alongside Nicholas Pocock (1740-1821), as one of the most important artists from that vicinity. His paintings have a wonderfully crisp quality, and the freshness of palette is very reminiscent of Pocock's work.
