Lot Essay

Although J.A. Knip is mainly known for his Italian landscape paintings and drawings, he also worked as an animal painter. The present lot is one of six paintings of stable interiors with farm animals which he painted between 1820 and 1830. The best known version of these stable scenes is the interior of a French garrison stable in Rosny-sur-Seine, painted in 1825 (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich, inv.no. 14 481; see E. Bergvelt, J.A. Knip 1777-1847, 's Hertogenbosch 1977, no. 105, p. 169, ill.).
