Lot Essay

The present watercolour is an intimate study of domestic life. The sitter may be the artist's wife Elizabeth, but more likely one of the two Lovett sisters Mary Anne and Matilda, who came to board with them and became effectively their family. After the arrival of the sisters in 1815, Cristall's work becomes more sensitive and less inspired by the classical past; reflecting his changed domestic circumstances.
